The Europe Entry/Exit System is changing the way people travel to Europe. From October 12, 2025, all non-EU travellers will see a new process at the borders of the 29 Schengen countries. The Europe Entry/Exit System (EES: Your Guide to Europe’s New Border System) is a new digital system that replaces old passport stamps. Instead of stamping your passport, the border will keep a digital record of when you enter and exit.
This system will:
Track your travel days automatically.
Make border checks faster and reduce mistakes.
Help spot overstays or fake documents.
You must register if you are:
A non-EU national visiting for less than 90 days in 180 days.
From countries like the UK, USA, Canada, or Australia.
Holding a short-stay Schengen visa.
You do not need to register if you are:
Living in Europe with a residence card or long-stay visa.
Under 12 years old (no fingerprints needed).
A family member of an EU/EEA citizen with free movement rights.
When you travel after October 12 for the first time:
Your passport will be scanned.
A photo of your face will be taken.
Four fingerprints will be collected (if you are 12 or older).
Your data will be saved digitally for future trips.
At first, some borders will have kiosks, while others may still use manual checks. Be ready for a mix during the first six months.
Arrive early at airports or land borders.
Follow instructions at kiosks, and remove hats or glasses for the photo.
Keep travel papers like accommodation, insurance, and return tickets with you.
Check your days using the HelloSchengen Calculator since stamps are gone.
EES (October 2025): Records your actual entry and exit at borders.
ETIAS (Expected 2026): An online authorisation before travelling, like the US ESTA.
Right now, you only need the Europe Entry/Exit System, not ETIAS.
